Florida's Front License Plate Law: Insights from Zeidwig Law

Navigating Florida's vehicle registration laws can be complex, particularly concerning the display of license plates. At Zeidwig Law, led by award-winning trial attorney Gary M. Zeidwig, we aim to clarify these regulations to ensure drivers remain compliant and informed.

Florida's License Plate Requirements

Unlike many states that mandate both front and rear license plates, Florida generally requires only a single plate displayed on the rear of the vehicle. This applies to most passenger vehicles, including cars and trucks. However, certain heavy commercial vehicles or truck tractors may be exceptions to this rule.

Exceptions to the Rule

While the majority of vehicles in Florida are exempt from displaying a front license plate, specific categories, such as some commercial trucks, are required to have a front gross weight plate. It's essential for owners of such vehicles to verify their obligations under state law to avoid potential citations.

Recent Legislative Developments

In March 2025, a bill (SB 92) was introduced proposing the requirement of front license plates for all vehicles in Florida. The initiative aimed to reduce hit-and-run incidents by enhancing vehicle identification. However, following public feedback, the proposal was withdrawn later that month, maintaining the current single-plate system.

Ensuring Compliance

To remain compliant with Florida's license plate laws:

·         Display Properly: Affix the license plate securely to the rear of your vehicle, ensuring it's clearly visible and unobstructed.

·         Avoid Alterations: Do not modify, obscure, or apply substances to the plate that could hinder its legibility. Violations can result in fines and points on your driving record.

·         Stay Informed: Regularly review state regulations and remain alert to any legislative changes that may affect license plate requirements.
